How Long Should an AI Screening Interview Be?

A first-round screening interview should be long enough to collect job-relevant evidence and short enough to respect candidates' time. There is no universal ideal duration for every position.

Start with the decision you need to make

A screening interview is usually meant to determine whether a candidate should move to a deeper human interview, not assess every possible competency in one sitting.

List the few criteria that matter most for that decision. If an interview requires dozens of unrelated questions, reconsider whether they belong in the first round.

A practical planning example

A simple initial screen might include a brief introduction, several role-relevant questions and time for closing instructions. A more technical role may require additional depth.

Test the real spoken duration of your questions. Reading five questions on paper takes much less time than hearing complete answers, follow-ups and clarifications.

Five factors affecting duration

Role complexity: Some positions need additional scenario-based evidence. Candidate experience: Instructions, accessibility and the ability to ask for help affect completion. Interview format: Fixed recordings and conversational interviews have different pacing. Follow-ups: Open-ended answers may require clarification. Billing rules: Some vendors charge more for longer sessions, so duration affects cost.

What to measure

Track starts, completions, drop-offs by question, candidate feedback and whether recruiters consider the responses sufficient for the next hiring step.

Do not simply shorten sessions to maximize completions; an interview with no useful evidence is still wasted time.

Set expectations

Tell candidates the estimated interview length in the invitation. Explain any time limits and what happens if connectivity is interrupted.

Conclusion

Design the shortest interview that can fairly answer your first-round screening questions, then refine it using evidence from real candidate experiences.
